My Yoga Story
I’m Elizabeth Rauers Newkirk, a yoga therapist and Pilates instructor in Savannah. My yoga career began in the 1980s as a modern dancer in NYC. The wear and tear of professional dance pushed me to look for healing in places that, for the time, were considered unconventional.
I found a community of Indian yogis, mostly elders, steeped in the deepest aspects of the ancient art of yoga. What I learned allowed me to dance a full career without injury. I also experienced the tranquility and peace of mind that comes with the practice.
And as my dance career wound down (and children arrived!), I pursued formal certification as both a yoga teacher and therapist, as well as Pilates instructor.
I returned home to Savannah, where I have taught for over 25 years. With time, I began to combine yoga and Pilates with elements of the Alexander Technique, a movement practice for everyday activities. The result is a method of invigorating, fluid movement derived from time-honored disciplines and customized to your needs.
I have been exercising with Elizabeth Newkirk for six years and it has saved my life! She has taught me that movement is everything. I have osteoarthritis in my back, legs, and knees.
Going to Elizabeth once a week has been my salvation and I follow her exercises at home (most of the time!). I hate to think of the condition I’d be in if I hadn’t found Elizabeth – she’s my hero!
I have been one of Elizabeth’s private clients for eight years. As a yoga therapist, she has successfully improved my balanced and flexibility – so important ins one’s later years.
In addition to her expertise, she is a wonderful person.
Elizabeth possesses an ability to transfer “body wisdom” to others. As a physician, I appreciate her gift for providing clear, achievable instructions that are both kind and transformative. She gets it. I feel fortunate to be one of her clients and students.
Taking yoga with Elizabeth has changed my life. I’ve been able to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications for chronic pain. I feel better, move better and am able to be more physically active than I have been in years.
I have attended her classes for 12 years. She is competent, thorough, caring and attentive to the needs of each person she works with, meeting them at their own level.
Every yoga session she leads is an opportunity to experience what yoga can be.
Elizabeth is a wonderful teacher. She is patient and concerned about her clients’ overall well-being. Every week is different so you never know what to expect. My balance is much better than when I started and I have much more strength and coordination.
I thought I would go twice then quit, as I’ve done in the past because exercise has never been fun. It’s now been a year and a half. Elizabeth keeps the exercise fun!
For almost 5 years, I have been fortunate to work one-on-one with Elizabeth Newkirk. I know her to be a fun, personable, caring and genuine person who respects her client’s privacy.
She has an extensive and ever-growing knowledge of movement, dance, Pilates, yoga and yoga therapy. She has a passion for learning and sharing that knowledge with her clients.
From the beginning, she has given me individualized sessions that address my physical limitations in a non-judgmental and supportive way. Lucky for me, she likes a challenge! She is always focused and in tune with my needs, which can vary from session to session. She modifies exercises when necessary.
One of the biggest compliments I have given her is that I often hear her calm, steady voice in my head reminding me to adjust my posture, position, etc. This has enabled me to take what I’ve learned from her and incorporate it into my daily life. The decision to hire Elizabeth to be my personal trainer was one of the best decisions I have ever made!
